Discover the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals by boot

Whether you are looking for a pleasant place for a short stroll, a more energetic walk or even a long distance challenge, the Forth & Clyde and Union Canal towpaths offer a great choice of canal walks.

Across Scotland

There really is only one enjoyable way to walk from one side of Scotland to the other in the central belt – via the Forth & Clyde Canal. The canal towpath makes up part of the long distance walking route, the John Muir Way. Or you can head along the Union Canal towpath for a city to city walk.

A Roman route

The Forth & Clyde Canal follows a similar route across Scotland to the Antonine Wall.  Try this scenic walk, starting at Auchinstarry. The circular route includes a stretch of Antonine Wall as well as some excellent canal walking.  Find out more about walks around the Antonine Wall.

Relaxing canal side walks

And of course you don’t have to trek its full length in order to appreciate the scenic beauty and abundance of wildlife. A short stroll or even a jog along any stretch of the towpath will allow you to experience the serenity of canal life while getting a healthy workout at the same time. The canal towpath makes for an excellent walk suitable for all ages and is a great route for walking in the city, getting to work or walking the dog. Escape the city streets for a while and enjoy a new perspective on the city.
